(2) Take One Skill Retake if only one module fell short. (3) Re-sit the full test — there's no waiting period and no limit on retakes. Most importantly: don't guess what went wrong. Is Band 9 really achievable, or just for native speakers?

Achievable, and not rare. Documented Band 9 scores exist from candidates whose first language wasn't English — including in Speaking, where the rubric explicitly does not require a native accent. Band 9 means "expert user" (fluent, accurate, appropriate) — not "born in London." What it does require: ruthless precision in every sentence. Do I need a British or American accent to score well in Speaking?

No. The official IELTS Speaking rubric scores pronunciation clarity, not accent. Don't fake an accent — it usually hurts your score by introducing inconsistency.

Does my handwriting affect my Writing score?

Only if the examiner literally cannot read it. There's no "neatness" mark. You can write in ALL CAPS if it's more legible. Cross out mistakes with a single line — examiners ignore crossed-out text. The bigger handwriting risk is wasted time: messy writers often re-write sentences instead of pushing forward. On computer-delivered IELTS this is a non-issue.

Will writing fewer than 250 / 150 words actually cost me marks?

Yes — meaningfully. The fixed word-count penalty was officially removed in 2018, but examiners still apply Task Achievement deductions because under-length essays can't fully address the prompt. Realistic impact: a 230-word Task 2 essay typically caps at Band 6 in Task Achievement regardless of quality. Aim for 270–290 (Task 2) and 165–185 (Task 1). What if I go blank or pause too long during Speaking?

Expected and survivable. Use a filler phrase to buy thinking time: "That's an interesting question — let me think for a moment." This is rated as natural fluency, not hesitation.
