Do I need an account to get a band score?
No. The scorer at the top of this page runs without an email and without a card. You get the overall band and the four criteria first. We ask for an email after the result, and you can ignore it.
What do I actually get without paying?
Three scored essays and three scored speaking answers, plus two reading passages and two listening clips with your right and wrong answers shown. You see the band and all four criteria every time. The written feedback is produced on the free tier but stays blurred until you upgrade.
How accurate is an AI IELTS band score?
Here is the honest version. Every Saturday we re-score a fixed calibration set through the live production scorer and publish the average error, including the weeks it gets worse. The reference bands on that set are labelled in house against the public IELTS band descriptors, and no script in it has been marked by a certified IELTS examiner. So read the number as a practice signal, not as a forecast of your official result. See this week's figure.
Can I just paste it into ChatGPT instead?
You can, and for a rough second opinion it is fine. The catch is that general-purpose chat models mark IELTS writing generously and move between runs, so the same essay can come back at two different bands. We measured our own scorer running high, published it and corrected it. Read the comparison.
Does it handle Academic and General Training?
Both. Task 2 is the same essay task either way. Task 1 is where they split: Academic Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, table or diagram, while General Training asks you for a letter. Pick the task and the scorer marks against that task, so a letter is never judged on a missing overview. Task 2 guide.
What happens to my essay?
Your text goes to Anthropic's API to be scored and is not used to train their models. Delete your account and your personal data goes within 30 days. Privacy policy.
How long does the marking take?
Your first band lands in about 10 seconds. The full marking, with the four criteria and the sentence-level fixes, arrives about a minute later. You stay on the page the whole time.
Is this the band I will get on test day?
No, and no tool outside the official test can tell you that. Use it for the thing it is good at: finding which of the four criteria is costing you the most marks, fixing that, and re-scoring to see whether the fix worked. How band scores are worked out.
